This file provides suggestions for using the HP Scanning Software that are not included in the product documentation.
System Requirements
====================
The HP Scanning Software requires System 7. No System 6.X versions are supported.
The HP Scanning Software requires a Macintosh with at least a Motorola 68020 microprocessor. The HP Scanning Software does not support Macintosh computers which use the Motorola 68000 microprocessor (such as the Macintosh Plus, Macintosh SE, and Macintosh Classic).
Installation Tips
================
If you have more than one hard disk, install the software onto the same disk where your system software is installed. After installing, you can move the HP Scanning Folder to another disk.
Before installing the HP Scanning Software turn off all extensions. Also, remove disk protection applications such as Empower, DiskLock, and A.M.E. from your hard disk. To turn off all extensions, press the shift key and hold it down while re-starting the computer. Then, insert the HP Scanning Software disk and run the installer.
If you are using one of the various INIT management tools that do not automatically notice INITs in your System folder (such as INITPicker), you may have to remove some temporary files left by the installer, such as Installer Cleanup and Installer Temp files. Drag them from your System folder into the trash can.
General Tips
===========
The HP Scanning Software has been set up to take the smallest amount of memory possible to run. If you run out of memory when scanning large pictures, increase the memory allocation for the HP PicturePlace and HP PictureScan applications. Refer to your Macintosh User's Guide for instructions.
If you are referred to the "Scanner Test" program, you should actually choose Test from the Scanner menu in the HP Utilities application found in your Help folder.
If you have any problems with the HP Scanning Software, turn off all of your extensions and retry the action to determine if the problem is a conflict with one of your extensions. To turn off all extensions, press the shift key and hold it down while re-starting the computer.
HP PictureScan Tips
==================
HP PictureScan's TWAIN implementation is not supported by the following applications: Aldus SuperPaint v3.5 and Aldus Digital Darkroom v2.01. Fractal Painter v2.0 works properly with gray pictures (photographs) but not with black and white ones (drawings). Also you should not cancel the final scan once it has begun when using Fractal Painter v2.0. For these or other TWAIN applications which do not support TWAIN with HP PictureScan, you should scan from HP PicturePlace and then import the picture into your application through either a file or the clipboard. You may also wish to call the application's manufacturer to see if they have a newer version with updated TWAIN support.
If you choose to cancel during a final scan, the application you are scanning to may put up an error dialog which might not be visible. If it appears that nothing you click on in HP PictureScan responds after canceling the scan, move the HP PictureScan window and look for an error dialog put up by the application. Clicking in that dialog should end the TWAIN session and HP PictureScan will go away.
Before scanning pages with an automatic document feeder, make sure that the paper is properly inserted in the document feeder.
HP PicturePlace Tips
===================
Version 1.01 of HP PicturePlace now supports Macintosh Drag and Drop.
When printing photographs, set the printer to print in grayscale mode. The setting is usually found in the printer's Print dialog or the Print Options dialog.
HP PicturePlace Editor Tips
=========================
When using the brush or the eraser, drawing is faster if the shape is square or rectangular instead of round or oval.
